Belarus' National Assembly seeks closer cooperation with Pan-African Parliament

The National Assembly of Belarus is ready to cooperate closely with the Pan-African Parliament, Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko said during his speech at the Fourth Ordinary Session of the Sixth Parliament of the Pan-African Parliament in Midrand, South Africa on 4 November, BelTA has learned.

"I am sincerely grateful for the invitation to participate in the session of the Pan-African Parliament. It is a great honor for me to represent my country and address the members of such a prestigious parliamentary assembly. For the first time in history, the voice of Belarus will be heard on the platform of one of the key bodies of the African Union," Igor Sergeyenko said.

The speaker noted that a lot has changed since the Pan-African Parliament was founded in 2004. "Today such an association needs more resources and partners," he emphasized. "The National Assembly of Belarus is ready to cooperate closely with the Pan-African Parliament.

Its objectives, designed to address vital issues of the region's development, are close and clear to us. They are universal and meet the spirit of the times. We welcome the efforts to implement the Agenda 2063, an ambitious, inspiring and relevant plan for all African countries."

As it was reported earlier, a delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus led by Speaker of the House of Representatives Igor Sergeyenko is on a visit to Midrand, South Africa on 4-5 November at the invitation of Chairman of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) Fortune Charumbira to take part in the Fourth Ordinary Session of the Sixth Parliament of the Pan-African Parliament. For the first time in history, the Belarusian parliament will be given the opportunity to speak at the official opening ceremony of the PAP session. The National Assembly of Belarus and the PAP are expected to sign a memorandum of cooperation, according to which the Belarusian parliament will be granted the status of an observer to this organization.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Igor Sergeyenko is set to meet with the leadership of the PAP, the National Assembly of South Africa, and heads of parliamentary delegations of African countries.
